“Macbeth shall never vanquish’d until Great Birnam to high Dunsinane hill” – Witches
Macbeth, depicting the perpetual struggle for power, is timelessly applicable to the past, present and future. As the story meanders through the provinces of conspiracy and bloody wars, the realization dawned upon the war leaving nothing but destruction and woeful countenance of thousands of hapless women, offspring and populace squashed in between war and peace. It is the war which made Macbeth a subjugator and a desperado. The thrashing about to retain power and latent evil desires in the inner recesses of human mind, make up the very flesh and blood of the plot. The ballet is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s magnum opus Macbeth into contemporary Sri Lankan dance theatre by Ravibandu and Samanthi dance ensemble. Here, the dramatic elements and situations in the play, have been translated into a piece of choreography blending the diverse traditions of dance and music."
