Kosgoda was severely hit by tsunami. Thousands died. Lack of state intervention was quite apparent in reconstruction. A few months later I shot these images when people have restarted rebuilding their homes. 69 houses were built by Loe Burnett, an advertising giant.

I met these young Tamil women in ftont of UN office. They are tsunami survivors and have lost their fishing gear in tsunami waves. Hence everyday morning they would come to this office or another NGO in search of a day job - they said to me. Some days they get work. Some days not.

Sharecropper’s woman

I talked to this young woman in Anuradhapura. She is a newly wedded wife struggling for building a new life with her sharecropper husband. Whilst her husband is cultivating paddy and other crops in someone else's land she rares cattle, goats, chicken etc. She said she liked to keep animals such as goats when they were not fit enough to give them milk instead of selling them to a slaughter house. But their economic conditions did not permit such "compassion".
